Uproot Fear: The Power of the Root Chakra

The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara in Sanskrit, is the first of the seven primary chakras in the human body. Buddhism and Hinduism have more than seven chakras and a more profound correlation to specific deities. Though other cultures have understood energetic systems, the spiritual traditions of India have transcended many modern spiritual communities to connect people to a basic understanding of the connections of our mind, body, and spirit. This energetic point is the foundation of who we are and is the key to grounding, stability, and overall well-being.

Root Support

The root chakra governs the adrenal glands and influences our fight-or-flight response. The first energetic point is intimately connected with our basic needs—food, shelter, and safety. Chakra, in Sanskrit, means disc, circle, or wheel, so if you envision the root chakra as a red ball speeding down a hill (underactive) or inching its way up a hill (overactive), you can see how each of these conditions can lead to various complications.

Overactive Root Chakra

When the red ball is inching its way up the hill, it can feel like every decision is massively critical, resulting in heightened nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, and constant on-edge. The emotional instability disturbs your peace and feeds an environment of fear and loss of control.

Underactive Root Chakra

When the red ball speeds down the hill, it can feel like life is simply passing you by. This can result in excessive daydreaming, poor concentration, spiciness, and difficulty remaining in the present moment. A lack of grounding disrupts your foundation, hinders decision-making, and disconnects you from the realities of your surroundings.

Balancing the Root Chakra

When the conditions are just right, and you have a more balanced root chakra, you can foster a sense of security and confidence, allowing us to face life's challenges with resilience. In addition to having your basic necessities met, you can also do simple things to create a stable foundation for the higher chakras to flourish:

Get Physical

  • Yoga Poses such as Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Tree Pose (Vrikshasana), and Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana) are beneficial.

  • Exercises that engage the lower body, like walking, running, and dancing.

Engage the Senses

  • Look at trees and visualize how deep their roots must be to support them.

  • Smell earthy scents like patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood, and vetiver.

  • Eat more root vegetables and protein-rich foods like carrots, beans, potatoes, and nuts.

  • Touch the ground by walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, soil, or gardening.

  • Listen to leaves rustling, deep and rhythmic drums, or a guided meditation.

Synergizing to Balance and Bliss

Think of the root chakra as your starting point, like the base of a mountain you're about to climb. Before you reach the top, you first have to make sure all the safety precautions have been taken. When you balance this chakra or energy point, you set the stage for everything else. Take your time, knowing that achieving balance is a process, and you will have to return to these skills often to maintain balance.
